Lucy Bronze - England Lioness: Why Her Autism Diagnosis Became a Turning Point - Not a Setback

Lucy Bronze - England Lioness: Why Her Autism Diagnosis Became a Turning Point - Not a Setback Like so many of us, we were glued to the TV this summer, cheering on the Lionesses as they fought their way to the UEFA Women’s EURO 2025 final. The atmosphere, the energy and the absolute grit of the players - it was unforgettable. And right at the heart of it was Lucy Bronze.

Lucy’s been a key part of the Lionesses for years. Strong, determined, endlessly focused. But what many people don’t realise is that she was only diagnosed with autism and ADHD in 2021 - well into her professional football career.

It came during an England training camp. She’d always known she thought a bit differently, processed things a bit faster, maybe came across as too intense sometimes. Her mum had even raised the possibility of autism when she was a teenager, but like so many women and girls, it wasn’t picked up. Getting a diagnosis as an adult brought everything into focus.

And rather than seeing it as a problem, Lucy embraced it.

'I’m not just passionate - I’m obsessed. That’s my autism. It’s my hyper-focus on football.’

It’s this ability to go all in, to think quickly and stay laser focused, that’s helped her become one of the best in the world. Five Champions League titles. Over 100 caps for England. And another heroic tournament performance this summer.

But what we admire most is what she’s doing off the pitch.

Lucy’s now an ambassador for the National Autistic Society, using her platform and voice to raise awareness and break down the stigma that still surrounds autism - especially in girls and women. She’s honest about her own experiences and proud to be neurodivergent. And by sharing her story, she’s helping others feel seen.

At Grace, we know how powerful that moment of clarity can be when a diagnosis finally makes sense of years of questions. We also know how many people, particularly women, are still masking, still misunderstood, still struggling to be taken seriously.

Lucy’s story is a reminder that being neurodivergent isn’t something to hide or fix. It’s something to understand and embrace. And when that happens, amazing things are possible. It's come home... again! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 Congratulations to the Lionesses!
